Table Topics Master

Table Topics provides an opportunity for Toastmasters to learn the art of impromptu speaking. The Topics Master leads the table topics portion of the club meeting, which can be the liveliest and most enjoyable part of the meeting if it is handled correctly.

Before the Meeting
* Prepare interesting table topics, which may be on a single theme, or on individual subjects.  The
number of topics required depends on the time allowed, but it is a good idea to have "spares" in case some speakers use only a very small portion of their allotted time.

* Keep topics short  and to the point. Keep your own comments brief. It is suggested easy topics are presented to newer members, the idea being that the speaker has a successful experience and therefore gains confidence.

* Prepare three copies of topics (one for yourself, one for the Table Topics Evaluator and one for the Timer).

At the Meeting
*  This session should involve those who don't have a major role on the programme, particularly anyone who has had not had an opportunity to speak during the meeting.

* Topics should be presented from the lectern but you should sit while participants are speaking, so have a chair nearby.

* Announce the time limit (normally 1 - 2 minutes) and the timing light procedures if this has not been done by the Toastmaster. eg "There will be a green light at 1 minute, amber at 90 seconds and a red light at 2 minutes."

* When delivering the topics, give the topic first, then nominate the speaker, to maintain the element of surprise.

* Remain standing until addressed by the speaker and be seated until he/she has completed the mini speech.
