Round Robin or Warm Up

In our club, we call this segment "Round Robin." But it is commonly know as a "Warm Up Session."

Before the Meeting

Prepare a topic that will be easy to speak on for 20 seconds only by all of the people who attend. (If there are a lot of people present, the time might be shortened to 15 seconds each or limited to one sentence each.                                                                         

At the Meeting

*State the topic (only one sentence is necessary), the time limit (20 seconds).

*Tell guests that they may speak but are not required to.  If they do not wish to speak they can say, "Pass".

*Commence by giving a BRIEF demonstration talk yourself.

*Ask an experienced speaker to begin and direct that following speakers will be in a clockwise or anti-clockwise order around the table.

*Complete the session by saying, "Mr/Madam Toastmaster, that completes the Round Robin segment".

Fortunately/unfortunately

This segment is to warm-up the meeting. In a time of 15- 30 seconds, commence a story ending with the word “fortunately”. The story is continued around the room alternating between fortunately and unfortunately. The time for each speaker is 30 seconds. (or less, for a large meeting)

Before the Meeting

* Prepare the opening of a story of your own that can be presented in a maximum of 30 seconds.

eg.  "Joe was running late for his Toastmasters meeting. He was driving through the heavy traffic, when he noticed......"

At the Meeting

• Start with a brief explanation of how the segment runs and the time for each speaker.

• Commence the story ending with fortunately, indicate to the next speaker they are to continue the story with the word fortunately, time their speech for 30 seconds then pass the story onto the next speaker with the word unfortunately. Continue around the room until everyone has had an opportunity to speak.
• Complete this segment by ending the story in 30 seconds and hand control to the Toastmaster.
  
  
  
  
  
  
  Another Round Robin  - 
  Last Word
  The object of this exercise is for the programmed Toastmaster to commence a story and each Toastmaster at the meeting continues the story from the last word uttered by the previous speaker.
  
  
  Each speaker is asked to speak for 15 seconds ONLY and the challenge is to keep the story going. Guests should only participate if they agree to do so. 
  
  
  After all participants have spoken, the Toastmaster controlling the segment completes the story.
  
  
  
  
  
  Continuing Story
  Much the same as "Last Word," but just take up the story where the previous speaker left off.
  
  
  
  

  Other Ideas for a Round Robin 
  Show an unusual object that no one is likely to know the use of, and ask them to explain what they think it is used for.
  
  
  Or ask them to "Sell" an item.
